The power of Biblical Christianity is not merely to be found in its unmatched teachings but also in the changes that it effects in the life and practice of those who embrace the teachings. In his letter to the Ephesians St. Paul did not only remind the church of the privileges that are theirs in Christ (Chapters 1-3), but he was equally forceful in reminding them of their responsibility to in give evidence to a watching world that these privileges are embraced by the way they live (4: 1- 6: 1-24). Do you know of your privileges in Christ? If you don’t, make time and study the book of Ephesians. If you know your privileges, how does this realization affect how you live? Teaching must lead to practice.

How much do you appreciate the death of Christ on the cross? The only kind of appreciation that is inspired by the Holy Spirit is the one that leads us to see the horror of our sinfulness and leads us to genuine repentance and the surrendering of life to his Lordship. Anything else is no more than empty sentimentalism. Read and meditate on Philippians 3: 7-11. Here is a genuine example of appreciation for the death of Christ for lost people like us. Have you shown your appreciation for the death of Christ?

Taking Our Faith In Jesus Seriously

Just imagine what would happen in our congregations, if followers of Christ were passionate about imitating and serving Him! We have an example of that in the book of Acts. Acts is the story about people who took their faith in Jesus seriously. Here is the testimony of non-believers about them: “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too,” (Acts 17: 6) What is the world saying about the church today? By the way, they are talking about you! You are the church –every Christ follower.

God’s Intervention Through Our Slavery

As people of African descent, our ancestors shared with the Jewish people the horrors of being enslaved. It was a slavery that was all invasive, one that robbed them of their dignity and personhood. How were they able to survive? It was and still because the Lord was on our side. “If it had not been for the Lord on my side-Where would I be?” (Helen Baylor) Moses never credited the survival and deliverance of his ancestors from the horrors of slavery, to their toughness, ingenuity, or wisdom but, always to the fact of God’s intervention. Stagnation in a Believer’s Spiritual Growth

Stagnation in our spiritual growth as believers is an age long problem in the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 3: 1- 4; Hebrews 5: 11 – 14) It is not a problem that should be ignored by the believer. Stagnation in the life of the believer always impacts the believer and the entire church negatively. Read the book of 1 Corinthians. Every problem dealt with in that church can be traced back to a lack of spiritual growth. Hey! Are you growing in Christ – having a deeper and deeper knowledge of Christ? Remember! If you are growing, others will see it and the body of which you are a part will be better because of you.

The Reality of the Holy Spirit’s Indwelling

To live with the reality that every believer is indwelt by the same Holy Spirit that filled, empowered and gifted Jesus, the Apostles and believers in every age is more than a doctrinal truth of the Bible. It leaves the believers in this present with no excuse for not living out the experiences of the Early Church as recorded in the book of Acts. Acts is the story of believers who took the reality of the Spirit’s indwelling and infilling absolutely serious. Think for a moment what will happen when the Body of Christ, Church, begins to live under the power of the Holy Spirit! Make the reading of Acts a personal project for the month of February.
